Houghton Girls Win WestPAC Track Meet – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school baseball yesterday…
– Houghton split its doubleheader against Negaunee, with an 8-7 victory, and a 9-5 loss.

– Calumet swept its twinbill against Lake Linden-Hubbell, 10-9 and 9-2. Brent Loukus had two hits and drove in three runs for the Copper Kings in the first game, and Carter Crouch had two hits and two RBI for the Lakes. Brandon Antila had two hits and scored three runs for Calumet in the second game, which was ended after three innings.

The Copper Country Flames American Legion Baseball Team will hold an informational meeting tonight at 6:00 at the Hancock Driving Park. Anyone between the ages of 15 and 18 who is interested in playing is invited.

In softball yesterday…
– Calumet v Lake Linden-Hubbell – no report.

– L’Anse dropped both of its games against Westwood, 12-2 and 10-5.
– Houghton v Gogebic – no report.

In golf, the Houghton boys team won the Calumet Invitational yesterday, with Calumet second and Hancock third. Jiseung Choi of the Gremlins medaled with a 77, with Calumet’s Landon Johnson three strokes back.

The Houghton girls won the WestPAC track and field meet yesterday at Houghton. Calumet was fifth, with L’Anse and Hancock tied for eighth. Anabel Needham of the Gremlins won the 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Lily Baker took the pole vault.

On the boys side, Calumet placed third behind Westwood and Ishpeming. Houghton tied for fourth with Negaunee, L’Anse was sixth, and Hancock seventh. Hancock’s Austin Salani won the pole vault.

In Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball play last night…
– At Miller Memorial Field in Laurium,
Auto Pro/ThermoAnalytics defeated Bucko’s/Labatt’s 19-12. Joe Richard had four hits for Auto Pro. The result of Bucko’s game against Luigi’s was not reported.
– At Hurontown, Koppers v Downtowner Two, and v McGann’s/Northern Auto – no report.
– At Tapiola, Lake Superior Design defeated Coca Cola/Monte Carlo 7-2. the result of Lake Superior Design’s game against Harter’s Carquest was not reported.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers’ losing streak reached eight last night, with a 6-3 loss to the Miami Marlins. Things looked good early, as Detroit took an early 3-0 lead, and Daniel Norris threw five shutout innings. Norris gave up a run in the sixth, and left as Miami scored three times in the seventh. Buck Farmer took the loss.

The Tigers host the Marlins again this afternoon. Matthew Boyd will start against Trevor Richards. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers won an 11-9 slugfest with the Cincinnati Reds yesterday. The Crew fell behind when Cincy scored five runs off Zach Davies in the second inning, but came back to tie the game by the end of the fourth, and scored five times in the sixth to put it away. Keston Hiura, Yasmani Grandal and Mike Moustakas homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers have today off, and begin a home set against the Philadelphia Phillies tomorrow night. Jhoulys Chacín will pitch against Jake Arrieta.

Christian Yelich missed his second straight game yesterday, as he deals with back spasms. He hopes to be ready tomorrow.

NBA

In NBA playoff action, the Milwaukee Bucks host the Toronto Raptors tonight. The Eastern Conference final is tied 2-2.
