College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team drew a tough opponent for their opening-round game in the NCAA hockey tournament. The Huskies will face top-ranked Boston College Friday afternoon at 2:00. The game will be played in Providence, Rhode Island. Tech earned the Central Collegiate Hockey Association’s automatic bid by defeating Bemidji State in the conference tournament Friday night, and is the only CCHA team to be included. The Huskies have a record of 19-14-6. The Eagles won the Hockey East regular season and tournament championships, and have a record of 31-5-1. Wisconsin and Quinnipiac will play in the other regional semifinal.

Three other Michigan teams earned invitations. Michigan State is seeded fourth, and will open against Western Michigan. The University of Michigan will face North Dakota. Both of those games will be played in Maryland Heights, Missouri.

High School

The Ishpeming High School girls basketball team claimed its first state title Saturday, with a decisive 73-54 victory over Kingston. The Hematites fell behind early, and trailed 22-11 at the end of the first quarter. They rallied in the second quarter, though, and took a one-point lead into halftime. In the second half, sophomore Jenessa Eagle ignited an Ishpeming surge, scoring 15 of her 27 points in the third quarter. Jenna Maki, the school’s all-time leading scorer, added 25 in her final game. It’s the first girls basketball title for any U.P. school since 2015, when Calumet and Saint Ignace won championships.
