Alex DeBrincat, David Perron and Patrick Kane scored for Detroit. Alex Lyon stopped 26 shots, and took the loss in net. The win gave Washington a two-point lead in the standings, as the teams vie for the final wild card playoff berth in the Eastern Conference. Detroit has 10 regular-season games remaining.

NFL

The National Football League has adopted some new rule changes for the upcoming season.

The most dramatic will affect kickoffs. The ball will be teed up at the kicking team’s 30-yard line, but the only player there will be the kicker. The rest of the players will be downfield. The receiving team’s line will spread out at their own 30-yard line, with the receiver behind them. The kicking team’s line will spread out at the receiving team’s 35-yard line. The configuration has been borrowed from the XFL. The goal is to reduce injuries caused by the violent collisions produced by full-speed runs down the field.

The league has also banned the swivel hip-drop tackle, which officials say results in a significantly higher injury rate than a standard tackle. The trade deadline has been moved back one week, and some additional referee calls are now eligible for video reviews.
