Flames Advance to Legion Semifinals – Saturday Sports Wrap

MLB

Jordan Zimmermann struggled again, as the Detroit Tigers lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 12-1 last night. Zimmermann didn’t make it through the fourth inning. He was charged with six runs on seven hits, and he walked four batters. Zach Reininger finished the fourth, and pitched the fifth, giving up four runs. Detroit’s only run came in the eighth, when Gordon Beckham’s groundout drove home JaCoby Jones.

The Tigers host the Blue Jays again tonight. Daniel Norris will pitch against Trent Thornton. Pregame coverage will start at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Jones returned from the injury list for last night’s game, after missing time because of a back problem. Victor Reyes was sent to Toledo to make room.

Jhoulys Chacín also had a short start, as the Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-7 last evening. Chacín allowed a run in the second inning, then was chased in the third, as the D-backs scored six times. Lorenzo Cain and Christian Yelich homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers visit the Diamondbacks again tonight. Gio Gonzalez will return from the injured list to start against Zack Greinke.

American Legion Baseball

The Copper Country Flames American Legion Baseball team advanced in the zone playoffs with two victories in pool play yesterday. The Flames fell to Marquette 7-4 in the opener. The Blues broke open a tie game with three runs in the sixth inning. Copper Country then built a 5-0 lead against the Escanaba Cubs, and held off a late rally to log a 5-4 win. They closed the day with a 9-1 victory over Iron Mountain.

The Flames will face Gladstone in the semifinals this morning at 11:30 at Gladstone. Marquette and Menominee will meet in the other semifinal at noon at Escanaba, with the championship match scheduled for 4:00 at Escanaba. Two or three teams will advance to the state championships in Gladwin.
