FB Wins for Kings, Lakes and Hornets – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school football last night…
– Calumet remained unbeaten with a 14-8 victory over Westwood. Scott Loukus threw two touchdown passes, and the Copper Kings defense held the Patriots off the scoreboard until the final minute.
– Houghton was shut out by Iron Mountain 39-0.
– Hancock lost to Negaunee 38-19.
– L’Anse defeated Gogebic 28-20. Jonah Dowd ran for two scores for the Purple Hornets.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell downed Gwinn 38-24. Caleb Klein ran for two touchdowns.

Today, Ontonagon hosts Newberry.

In high school volleyball today…
– Calumet plays at the Ashwaubenon Invitational.
– Houghton plays at The Rock Invitational at Gladstone.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Chassell, Ontonagon, Baraga, and Jeffers compete at the Baraga Invitational.

At the Hancock cross country invitational, Ishpeming won the boys’ competition, with Houghton second. Gogebic’s Adam Mazurek placed first individually. Houghton and Chassell finished one-two on the women’s side, with Maria Velat of the Gremlins placing first individually.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University women’s soccer team blanked Maranatha Baptist 6-0 yesterday afternoon. Kirsten L’Esperance scored twice for the Lions, who outshot the Sabercats 34-3. Finlandia goalkeeper Samantha Linteo never had to make a save. The Lions will entertain Northland College this morning.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team will host Franklin College today at 6:30.

The Finlandia football team will host Ripon College today at 1:00. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:40 on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

GLIAC

The Michigan Tech volleyball team split its games at the Huskies Classic in Saint Cloud, Minnesota yesterday, falling to Saint Cloud State 3-1 (19-25, 25-27, 25-19, 18-25), and defeating Bemidji State 3-1 (29-31, 25-17, 25-12, 25-13). The Huskies will wrap up the classic against Minnesota-Crookston today.

The MTU soccer team lost 2-1 at Minnesota-Moorhead yesterday. Gabby Sgambati scored the Huskies’ only goal. The Huskies play at Minnesota-Crookston tomorrow.

The Tech football team plays at McKendree University this afternoon.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost 6-2 to the Baltimore Orioles last night. Jordan Zimmermann started strong, giving up a run through the first four innings, but left after the O’s scored three times in the fifth, and took the loss.

The Tigers host the Orioles again tonight. Daniel Norris will pitch against Gabriel Ynoa. Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift. 

The Milwaukee Brewers’ seven game win streak ended last night with a 10-0 loss to the Saint Louis Cardinals. The Cards chased starter Adrian Houser with four runs in the third inning. They added six more in the sixth off Jake Faria and Jimmy Nelson.

The Brewers play the Cardinals in Saint Louis again tonight. Jordan Lyles will start against Jack Flaherty.

The Cubs won yesterday, so Saint Louis still leads the National League Central Division by four games over Chicago, with Milwaukee five games back, and a game behind the Cubs in the race for the final wild card playoff berth.

NFL

The Green Bay Packers host the Minnesota Vikings in a 1:00 game tomorrow. The Detroit Lions entertain the Los Angeles Chargers in a 1:00 contest. Pregame coverage will begin at 11:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

Running

The sixth annual Aspirus Keweenaw Light the Night Fun Run/Walk will be held tonight at Ray Kestner Waterfront Park in Houghton. Light the Night kicks off at 7:00 pm with a free 1K for children. The 10k run will begin at 7:30, and the 5K Fun Run/Walk follows at 7:45. Onsite registration begins at 5:00.

Our high school football coverage continues Friday, when Hancock entertains Gwinn. The pregame show will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
