Gremlin Boys, Girls Runners-Up at WestPAC Track Meet – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school baseball yesterday…
• Houghton lost to Negaunee 13-0 and 11-8.
• Calumet split with Westwood, taking the first game 8-3, and dropping the nightcap 10-8 in extra innings.
• Hancock v Gwinn – no report.

In baseball today…
• Houghton entertains Kingsford.

In softball yesterday…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell and Calumet split their doubleheader, with the Lakes taking the first game 9-4, and the Copper Kings claiming the nightcap 13-8.
• Hancock fell to Negaunee 4-1 and 12-4.

In softball today…
• Houghton travels to Ironwood.
• Baraga plays at L’Anse.

In golf yesterday…
• At the Calumet course, Houghton won the boys meet, with Calumet second, and Hancock third. Individual results were not reported. Calumet took the girls meet, with Houghton second. Lily Keranen of the Copper Kings medaled. The Gremlins’ top finisher was Maren Pietila. See full girls results here.
• The Copper Mountain Conference at Watersmeet – no report.

Houghton finished second to Negaunee in both WestPAC track championship meets yesterday.
• On the girls side, Calumet finished seventh and Hancock eighth. For the Gremlins, Danica Ryynanen won the 100-meter hurdles, and the 4×400 relay team placed first. Caitlyn Strom won the long jump for Calumet.
• On the boys side, Calumet placed third, and Hancock tied for seventh. The Gremlins’ 4×800 relay team won, Brody Mattila claimed the 300-meter hurdles, Ryan Dixon took the high jump, Zack Horsch won the pole vault, and Luke Hill won the 800, 1600 and 3200-meter runs. The Copper Kings got a win from their 4×100 relay team. Braydon Nelson won the 100 and 200-meter dashes and the long jump, and Sincere Brooks took the discus throw.

Next fall’s 11-player high school football championship games will be played a day later than usual. The games, which are usually staged on Friday and Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, will be pushed back to Saturday and Sunday so that Michigan State and Penn State can use Ford Field for a nationally televised college game on Black Friday.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team has added a new member. Reece Scott is transferring in after two seasons with Division I Grambling State University.

NBA

The Celtics host the Heat tonight. Miami leads the Eastern Conference finals 3-1.

NHL

The Panthers advanced to the Stanley Cup series by upending the Hurricanes 4-3 last night. Matthew Tkachuk scored the game-winner with four seconds remaining. Florida sweeps the Eastern Conference finals 4-0.

The Stars host the Golden Knights tonight. Vegas leads the Western Conference finals 3-0.

MLB

The Tigers survived a half-hour rain delay, and defeated the Royals 6-4 last night. Riley Greene homered, and Zack Short blasted a three-run, pinch-hit shot. Jonathan Schoop’s two-run double in the eighth provided the winning margin.

The Tigers host the White Sox tonight. Alex Faedo will start against Lucas Giolito. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers blanked the Astros 4-0 yesterday. Willy Adames, Owen Miller and Brian Anderson homered. Adrian Houser earned the win, pitching into the sixth, and giving up just two hits.

The Brewers entertain the Giants tonight.

Slow Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball League play last night…
• Bucko’s/Labatts outslugged Koppers 39-31, then defeated Amy J’s 19-4.
• A and S Industrial/Loukus Tech defeated Auto Pro/Thermoanalytics 22-8, then v Pat’s Foods/Bucko’s (not reported).

Cycling

Registration is still open for this weekend’s Ride the Keweenaw cycling festival, although limited slots are available for some events. This year’s schedule includes a guided ride through the Adventure Mine tomorrow. Saturday will feature guided rides at the Tech Trails in Houghton, the Churning Rapids Trails in Hancock, and the Swedetown Trails in Calumet, with a new Family Enduro at the Tech Trails. Sunday’s activities are centered in Copper Harbor, and include the Lake Superior Gravity Series Enduro, along with Taste of the Harbor in the park that evening, Art Bike at the Harbor, and live music.
