In softball yesterday…
 • Calumet swept Hancock, 18-1 and 26-16.

In high school baseball yesterday…
• The doubleheader between Houghton and Ontonagon was canceled.

In baseball today…
• Houghton and Calumet will compete at a tournament at Negaunee. The Gremlins will face the Miners at 10:00. The Copper Kings will take on Superior Central at noon. The consolation game will start at 2:00, with the championship game at 4:00.

In track yesterday…
• At the Houghton County Invitational at Calumet, team standings were not provided. Among individual highlights…
– In the girls meet, Carli Jacques of Calumet won the 100 and 200-meter runs. Houghton’s Ingrid Seagren took the 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Lily Williston of the Gremlins won the shot put and the discus.
– In the boys meet, Eric Weiss of Houghton claimed the 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Nathan Erva of the Gremlins won the 110 and 300-meter hurdles. Calumet’s Dryden Nelson won the 100-meter dash and the long jump.

A couple of meet records were set. The Dollar Bay boys 4×800 relay team of Davin Hill, Conner LeClaire, Nik Thomas, and Johnny Norland eclipsed a 28-year-old record by more than five seconds. Norland’s victory in the 400-meter run bested the old mark that was set by Calumet’s Chris Plowe in 2001.

• L’Anse competed at the Negaunee Lions Club meet. The Purple Hornets’ best finish was in the high jump, where Nathan Hochstein placed second. See full individual results here.

College Baseball

The Finlandia University baseball team still hasn’t won a game, but continues to set school records. The Lions lost 9-0 and 11-1 at Wisconsin-Stout. Nik Geiser played in his 122nd game as a Lion, passing the old career mark set by Joey Krug. The Lions fall to 0-35, and end their season with two more games at Wisconsin-Stout this afternoon.

College Football

The Finlandia University football team has added a new recruit. Abel Aguirre is an offensive lineman from El Mirage, Arizona.

College Soccer

The Finlandia men’s soccer team has also added a new player. Christian Reeves played at Robbinsdale Cooper High School in Crystal, Minnesota.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons lost 104-91 to the Denver Nuggets last night. With only eight players available, Hamidou Diallo scored 18 and grabbed 12 rebounds for Detroit. Tyler Cook added a career-best 17 points, and Deividas Sirvydis scored 16 before leaving the game in the third quarter, after he was kicked in the calf.

The Pistons conclude their season tomorrow night at home against the Miami Heat. Coverage will begin at 7:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

NHL

Even though the regular season won’t end until Wednesday, the NHL playoffs open tonight. The Capitals host the Bruins in game one of their first-round series.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers’ four-game win streak ended with a 4-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs last evening. Detroit collected just four hits. Two were back-to-back solo home runs by Jake Rogers and Robbie Grossman in the sixth inning. Tarik Skubal gave up four runs on eight hits over six innings, and took the loss.

The Tigers continue that home set against the Cubs this afternoon. José Ureña will face Trevor Williams. Coverage begins at 3:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Pitcher Franklin Pérez remains a Detroit Tiger. Pérez was waived off the 40-man roster earlier this week. He was not claimed by another team, and signed a new minor-league deal with Detroit. Pérez was a highly-ranked prospect who came to Detroit from Houston as part of the Justin Verlander trade back in 2017. Injuries have limited him to just 27 minor-league innings since then, and he is facing shoulder surgery that will sideline him for the rest of this season.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Atlanta Braves 6-3 last night. Adrian Houser labored through three innings, giving up two runs, and walking five batters. Luis Urías and Manny Piña hit back-to-back homers in the ninth for Milwaukee.

The Brewers play at Atlanta again tonight. Brett Anderson will pitch against Ian Anderson.
