MLB

Robbie Grossman singled home Niko Goodrum with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, to lift the Detroit Tigers to an 8-7 victory over the Kansas City Royals last night. Grossman’s fifth RBI of the night salvaged a game in which the Tigers had a seven-run lead after five innings. K-C scored three runs off Joe Jiménez in the eighth inning, and tied the game with four off José Cisnero in the top of the ninth. Gregory Soto struck out Hunter Dozier with two runners on base to end the inning, and earn the win.

The Tigers and Royals meet again tonight in Detroit. Casey Mize will face Danny Duffy. Coverage begins at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit catcher Grayson Greiner left last night’s game with a tight hamstring. Manager A,J. Hinch said Greiner will probably join catcher Wilson Ramos on the injured list. Eric Haase would be the likely call-up from Toledo.

The Saint Louis Cardinals scored five times in the top of the 11th inning, and defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 6-1 last night. The loss spoiled a strong outing by starter Freddy Peralta, who gave up just one hit over seven innings, and left with a 1-0 lead. Devon Williams gave up the tying run in the eighth. Brad Boxberger took the loss, giving up two home runs in the 11th.

The Brewers entertain the Cardinals again this evening. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against John Gant.

Pitcher Jordan Zimmermann has retired. Zimmermann made the All-Star team twice with the Washington Nationals. He signed a big contract with the Tigers in 2016, but struggled with injuries over five unproductive seasons. He inked a minor league deal with the Brewers this season, and pitched in two games, but admitted that he was still battling physical problems.
