High School

In high school softball yesterday…
• Houghton defeated Lake Linden-Hubbell 9-2. The Lakes scored both of their runs in the top of the first inning, with help from a Payton Goldsworthy single. Houghton responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning, powered by a two-run Kenzie Collard double and a Jacey Sleeman RBI single. Estalla Soumis got the win for the Gremlins, striking out five over seven innings, and also hit a triple. Sleeman and Collard each collected three hits.

In softball today…
• Hancock plays at Ishpeming.
• Calumet travels to Iron Mountain.

In baseball yesterday…
• Jeffers dropped two to Norway, 4-3 and 11-1.

In baseball today…
• Hancock welcomes Westwood.
• Jeffers journeys to Ironwood.

The Houghton girls soccer team entertains Sault Ste. Marie today.

In golf, local teams will tee off at the Hancock Invitational at the Portage Lake Course.

In track and field…
• Houghton county teams will compete at the Houghton County Invitational.
• Baraga will compete at Bessemer.

NHL

In second-round NHL play last evening…
• The Panthers routed the Bruins 6-1. That Eastern Conference series is tied 1-1.
• The Canucks shaded the Oilers 5-4 in the opening game of their Western Conference series.

Tonight…
• The Hurricanes host the Rangers. New York has a 2-0 lead in that Eastern Conference set.
• The Stars welcome the Avalanche. Colorado leads that Western Conference set 1-0.

NBA

In the NBA last evening…
• The Knicks outscored the Pacers 130-121. New York leads that Eastern Conference semifinal series 2-0.

Tonight…
• The Celtics entertain the Cavaliers. Boston is up 2-0 in that Eastern Conference semifinal series.
• The Thunder welcome the Mavericks. Oklahoma City leads that Western Conference semifinal 1-0.

MLB

The Tigers couldn’t hold an early lead, and fell to the Guardians 5-4 in 10 innings yesterday. After spotting Cleveland two runs in the bottom of the second, Detroit plated four in the top of the fourth, powered by a two-run Colt Keith single and a Zach McInstry RBI double. After that, the Guardians’ bullpen allowed the Tigers just two more hits. After scoring a run in the bottom of the eighth, David Fry’s home run off Andrew Chafin in the bottom of ninth tied the game. Brayan Rocchio singled home the winning run of Alex Lange in the bottom of the 10th.

The Tigers have today off, and host the Astros tomorrow night. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Mark Canha missed his second straight game yesterday. He’s suffering from a respiratory infection.

The Royals scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to seal a 6-4 victory over the Brewers yesterday. Milwaukee countered with two runs in the top of the ninth, but couldn’t complete the comeback. Gary Sánchez homered for the Crew.

The Brewers entertain the Cardinals tonight. Tobias Myers will pitch against Sonny Gray.

Christian Yelich returned to the line-up for last night’s game. He’d been out since mid-April with back problems. Tyler Black has been sent down to Nashville to make room.

Running

The 18th annual Denise Marth Memorial Family Fun Run Walk and Roll will be held Saturday. Registration will be open between 9:15 and 9:45 at L’Anse Waterfront Park. The trek along Bay Shore Drive will begin at 10. The cost is $5 per person, with proceeds benefiting the Baraga County Community Foundation.
