Houghton Hockey Overpowers TC Central – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In hockey last evening…
• Houghton erupted for five goals in the second period, and blanked Traverse City Central 7-0. Troy Povich made 17 saves to earn the shutout in net. Camden Markham had two goals and two assists. Landon Stevens had two goals and one assist. Sully Rajala, Noah Kriepke and Connor Arko each scored once.
• Jeffers fell 9-4 at Escanaba. Kailob Bianco scored early for the Jets, but the Eskymoes rolled up a 7-1 lead before Benton Rajala, Trayton Helminen and Kellen Koskinen each added late tallies.

Today…
• Hancock hosts Traverse City Central at 1:00.

In high school girls basketball last night…
• Houghton outscored Ishpeming 62-45.
• Hancock shut down Jeffers 66-18.
• Chassell lost to Watersmeet 46-39.
• Baraga got past Ontonagon 42-38.

The Houghton High School swim team competes at the Westwood Invitational today.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team dropped a 4-3 overtime decision at Northern Michigan last night. Kash Rasmussen scored twice for the Huskies. Logan Pietila’s goal early in the third period gave Tech a late lead, but Josh Zinger’s tally with 91 seconds remaining forced overtime. Alex Frye scored the game-winner. Blake Pietila stopped 25 shots, and took the loss in net.

Those teams play again tonight at 6:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

Both Finlandia hockey teams host Lake Forest this weekend. Men’s games begin today at 5:00 and tomorrow at 2:00. Women’s games start this evening at 8:00, and tomorrow at 5:30.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams play at Purdue Northwest today.

Both Northern play at Parkside.

The Finlandia women’s basketball team outscored North Central 70-49 last evening. Bethany Baldwin led a balanced Lions attack with 12 points. Elli Djerf and Natalie Bartle each added 11.

The Finlandia men’s team lost to North Central, 82-65. Noah Prestia and Ilrick Higgins-Moise each scored 12 points.

Both Finlandia teams will welcome the University of Northwestern today – the women at 4:00, and the men at 6:00.

College Cross Country

The Michigan Tech men’s cross country team placed 10th at the NCAA Division II National Championships yesterday – its best finish ever. Former Houghton High School standout Clayton Sayen placed 16th individually – also the best-ever finish in school history. Drew Kolodge of the Huskies finished 28th individually, and both earned All-American status.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers downed the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 6-3 last night, and visit the De Pere Deacons this evening.

The Calumet Wolverines defeated the Eagle River Falcons 5-3 in Wisconsin. Those teams meet again tonight at 7:30 at the Colosseum.

NHL

The Red Wings host the Golden Knights tonight. Because of college football on 99.3 The Lift, coverage will begin at 6:45 on KBear 102.3.

Detroit will play without Tyler Bertuzzi for the next six weeks. He has undergone surgery to repair damage to his left hand, after he was hit by a shot during Wednesday’s loss to the Sabres.

NBA

The Pistons entertain the Grizzlies tomorrow.

NFL

Tomorrow…
• The Lions host the Jaguars in a 1:00 game on 99.3 The Lift.
• The Packers visit the Bears for a 1:00 contest. Tackle David Bakhtiari will miss the game, after he had his appendix removed this week.

MLB

The makeover of the Brewers continues. Yesterday, Milwaukee traded second baseman Kolten Wong to the Mariners, in exchange for for outfielder Jesse Winker and infielder Abraham Toro. Winker was an All Star for the Reds in 2021, but struggled in Seattle last season. Toro struggled at the plate as well, but will be one of several candidates to take over at second base.
